As a self-professed John Mayer fan who’s followed the man’s career throughout the years and the twisting path it has taken. Since his previous albums, Room For Squares, Heavier Things and Continuum, I’ve seen two types of John Mayer. This multi-grammy award winner who writes several catchy songs with killer lyrics, has released his new “heartbreak themed” album called Battle Studies.
From pop songs to swagger blues (John Mayer Trio) but on this album I can’t really tell which is which. Songs that sound like pop such as “Heartbreak Warfare” and “Friends, Lovers or Nothing” but most of the tracks on Battle Studies take on a theme of heartbreak as war.
Musically, he really sounds awesome that this guy combines pop and blues like he did from the past. Showcasing his blues abilities, guitar chops and his pop voice. On his cover of Crossroads it’s just a bit of blues. Not so impressive. “Perfectly Lonely”, “Edge of Desire” and “Who Says” are my favorites on the album.
When you hear these songs on Battle Studies, it’s really hard to pinpoint what exactly Mayer is trying to accomplish with the record. Is he going for pop? For blues? A combination of the two? Or is he trying to move in a new direction?
If John Mayer is trying to blend the blues side of him and his pop personalities, I think Battle Studies is a good start. Overall it’s a brilliant CD.

I so love this guy.
